Michael and Janet Calhoun

Traditions Pottery was started in 1992. Janet is a sixth-generation potter from the Owens Family of Seagrove, NC. M.L. Owens of Original Owens Pottery was Janet's grandfather. She strives to continue the traditional pieces like Rebekah pitchers, candlesticks, and teapots, as well as her own designs of functional and decorative items. Michael, though new to pottery initially, quickly learned the trade and started making face jugs shortly after they married in 1986. Today, his much-desired Santa jugs and mugs are always in high demand. He also makes large serving items like pitchers, bowls, and baking dishes. They were awarded the Folk & Traditional Arts Master Artist Fellowship Award in 2020 through South Arts.
